Do you feel like your team is lacking accountability and it's affecting your business's success? I’ve been there. As an entrepreneur, I faced the same challenge and realized that fostering a culture of accountability is crucial. It's a path filled with lessons that have shaped me into a more effective and responsible leader. In this blog, I’ll share key takeaways from my experiences, providing you with actionable insights to foster accountability within your own business.

Embrace Self-Reflection

Taking a deep look at yourself is essential for growth. Evaluating who you are to others and how you work in both business and family relationships can reveal important insights. Unfortunately, my journey of self-assessment began after my divorce. I had to confront the reality that I was responsible for my actions and their outcomes. This painful yet necessary reflection helped me understand my role in both my personal and professional failures and successes.

Whatever you do in your life, whether you run a multinational business or you are an aspiring entrepreneur, always believe in self-evaluation.  This self-evaluation is crucial in understanding the impact you have on others. It is not easy, but it is necessary for growth.

Take Responsibility for Your Actions

Acknowledging your role in everything that occurs in your life is the first step towards meaningful change. I realized that I was responsible for not spending enough time with my kids, the breakdown of my marriage, and the environment at my companies.

I learned to own my outcomes. This realization came during the two-year Team Management and Leadership Program in 2013. Recognizing my responsibility was crucial in my journey towards becoming more accountable. Taking responsibility is the first step toward meaningful change.

Effective Communication is Key

Through the Team Management and Leadership Program, I learned that effective communication, or the lack thereof, impacts everything. Clear and consistent communication is essential for maintaining healthy relationships and achieving business success. This was a hard lesson, as I noticed that my lack of communication led to many issues within my team and company.

 It's Possible to Get Unstuck

Holding onto blame is unproductive. Embrace change, let go of blame, and focus on moving forward. Positive change is always possible, no matter how stuck you feel. During my self-assessment, I learned to shift my perspective from blaming others to taking responsibility. This change was transformative and allowed me to move forward effectively.

Manage Without Emotion

Viewing situations as effective or ineffective, rather than right or wrong, helps manage without emotional bias. This perspective shift allows for more rational and constructive decision-making. Adopting this mindset significantly improved how I handled challenges, enabling me to address issues without getting bogged down by emotions.

Identify and Address Gaps

Acknowledging gaps without judgment allows you to address issues constructively. Focus on solutions rather than dwelling on problems to achieve better outcomes. I learned to identify gaps in my management style and work on fixing them, which greatly enhanced my leadership effectiveness.

You will find me looking at whether something is effective or ineffective without any emotion. I learned that I could remove the emotion from what I'm managing. Because of this, you'll often hear me say, “Hey, there's nothing wrong here.” You will hear that because there isn't anything wrong. It's just an opportunity to distinguish where the gaps are.

Own Your Gaps and Commit

When I took a look to see what I was doing and how I was doing it, I noticed I was manipulative. There was a lack of integrity in the way I worked with people. I did not stay on top of things in a way that worked when something did not go as planned.

Recognizing and owning your gaps is essential. Commit to change and uphold integrity in your actions to build trust and reliability. This commitment transformed my approach to leadership and accountability, making me more dependable and trustworthy.

Value Team Feedback

Your team’s feedback is invaluable.  Recognize your shortcomings and continuously work on improvement. Their insights can guide you in becoming a better leader. My team’s feedback during the program helped me realize areas where I needed to improve, shaping me into a more effective leader.

Stay Committed Even When It's Hard

If you want to become a success, you have to evaluate what’s working, what isn’t and where the gaps are – no matter how tough things get. Being committed in the face of challenges is crucial for achieving long-term success. I learned this valuable lesson on my leadership journey, where it helped me navigate difficult periods.

Transform Through Commitment

Commitment leads to transformation. Taking ownership and responsibility is transformative. This commitment paves the way for more positive and effective interactions within your team. It’s a continuous process, but one that has made a significant difference in my personal and professional life.

Foster Accountability

Create an environment where accountability is empowering. Develop a culture where people feel counted on and use accountability as a tool for growth. I worked towards fostering such a culture in my companies, which led to a more responsible and committed team.

My newfound excitement about leadership drove me to get 50 CEOs together. We met in groups and looked at what we could do to impact our business and bring the level of integrity we wanted to our companies. We wanted to have people feel counted on and have accountability function as a tool and not a weapon.

Seek and Embrace Support

Seek and embrace support from others. Collaboration can lead to significant achievements and provide the necessary support for your initiatives. The support from my peers was instrumental in my growth and success, highlighting the importance of a strong support network.

Practice Gratitude

Express gratitude for the support and contributions of others. Gratitude fosters a positive environment and drives continuous improvement. I always make it a point to practice gratitude, which has helped build a positive company culture.

Conclusion

The journey of self-reflection and accountability has been transformative for me as a leader and entrepreneur. By embracing these lessons, I’ve fostered a culture of integrity and accountability within my companies. It’s a continuous process, but one that has made a significant difference in my personal and professional life. I encourage you to take these lessons to heart and apply them in your own journey toward becoming a more effective and accountable leader.
